Trilussa I All'ombra

Trastevere, Piazza Trilussa in Roma
Trilussa, or Carlo Salustri, to de-anagrammatise his real name, was a poet that I met when I got lost in Roma. The poet is depicted as he is reciting one of his humorous and satirical poems from the stage of a theater. The bronze statue was made by the sculptor Lorenzo Ferri and the inauguration took place on December 21, 1954. Trilussa was also an artist and would make sketches for many of his poems.

"In the Shade"
As I’m reading my usual newspaper,
sprawled in the shade of a haystack,
I see a hog, and I tell it, — Goodbye, pig! —
I see a donkey, and I tell it, — Goodbye, ass —
Maybe these animals won’t understand me;
however, at least I get the satisfaction
of being able to say things as they are,
without fear of ending up in jail.
